This chapter provides an overview of the art and science of cryptography. Emphasis is on key points, especially where this knowledge is important in understanding cryptography’s implementation in virtual private networks (VPNs) and other IOS services that require cryptography. Chapter 7, “Virtual Private Networks with IPsec,” has more information on configuring VPNs. This chapter has a practical emphasis, with specific reference to examples of where cryptographic technology might be implemented in a modern cryptosystem, such as those found in Cisco Self-Defending Networks.
