Acknowledgments

We are deeply indebted to many people who contributed to the Emerging Leader Edition of True North. First to Lauren Schwenk, who served as our chief of staff on this project. She brings great skill, speed, and thoroughness to research, writing, editing, and design. We couldn't have written this book without her.

We also appreciate the encouragement and support of the Wiley team, led by Jeanenne Ray, in this book and all books in the True North series. The pioneering work on leadership by the late Warren Bennis and David Gergen provided the intellectual basis for many of the ideas here. We are indebted to Peter Sims and Diana Mayer, who contributed so much to the original True North in 2007.

From Bill: The new ideas in the Emerging Leader Edition of True North have been greatly enhanced by our leadership group at Harvard Business School (HBS), especially the research, leadership theories, and brilliant teaching of Dean Nitin Nohria, Hubert Joly, Scott Snook, and Tom DeLong, along with other HBS colleagues for their insights and wisdom: Michael Porter, Krishna Palepu, Mihir Desai, Ranjay Gulati, Amy Edmondson, Das Narayandas, Len Schlesinger, Frances Frei, Srikant Datar, Rob Kaplan, Jay Lorsch, and the late Clay Christensen. Thanks also to Diane Weinhold and Stacy Walcheski of the George Family Office, who provided helpful support and project management. The insights, counsel, and encouragement of my wife, Penny, have made this book possible.

From Zach: Thanks to my colleagues at Three Ships who have read this book, worked to apply its ideas, and journeyed together toward becoming more authentic leaders. I particularly appreciate Aarti Sura, Lauren Prosser, John Morgan, John Clayton, Seth Lytton, Walker Fuller, and Steve Noel, who each provided constructive feedback on this new edition. David Cusick, Shane Dutka, Derek Gould, Sarah Haupt, Casey Head, Christian von Kantzow, Marc Lewis, Andres Riobueno, Rebekah Sedaca, Anna Skender, and many others have engaged with the content and shaped it through our leadership development small groups. Thanks also to my awesome assistant, Lily Revels. I have the best colleagues in the world, and I am grateful for the many gentle nudges (okay, strong steers?) they provide. Finally, when I describe my wife, Katie, I always include the word wise. She is an amazing person, wife, and mother. I am deeply grateful for her generally—but also specifically for our discussions on leadership development and her willingness to talk about True North on so many dates!
