What’s New in This Book

This book started as Apple Watch: A Take Control Crash Course and was published even before the first Apple Watch arrived. Since then, the watch has become a major product in Apple’s lineup and I see people wearing them everywhere. The book you’re reading now is a complete overhaul and expansion of that humble little guide into a full Take Control title. Noteworthy changes include:

  • The book covers watchOS 6 and new features such as cellular capability on some models, the ability to view the Home screen as a list, the Noise app, Walkie-Talkie, the Compass, and others.

  • The Series 5 introduced the first always-on display on the Apple Watch, which requires settings not found on other watch models.

  • You can now purchase and Install Apps directly from the App Store on the watch.

  • I created a new section, Apple Watch First Tasks, to point you to actions that will immediately help you improve how you use the watch.

  • The Monitor Your Heart Health section has been expanded to include the ECG app included on Series 4 and later models.

  • Track Your Cycle has (finally) been added to the watch to easily track and monitor menstruation cycles.

  • The Use Emergency Features section includes the fall detection features introduced with the Series 4.

  • The method of locating a misplaced (or potentially stolen) watch has changed with the introduction of the Find My app in iOS 13, iPadOS 13, and macOS Catalina. If the Watch Goes Missing has been rewritten.

  • You can now view and create to-do items in the Reminders app directly on the watch (although adding new calendar entries is possible only using Siri or the iPhone).
