Overview of Office Communications Server Clients

Microsoft offers a number of different clients that enable users to sign in to Office Communications Server 2007. There are a number of new clients available for Office Communications Server 2007 that are not available in previous releases.

Clients for Live Communications Server 2003 include the following:

  • Windows Messenger 5.1

Clients for Live Communications Server 2005 SP1 include the following:

  • Office Communicator 2005

  • Office Communicator Mobile 2005

  • Communicator Web Access (2005 release), which is available as a Web download

Clients for Office Communications Server 2007 are as follows:

  • Office Communicator 2007, a Windows client that runs on the latest service packs of Windows Vista, Windows XP, and Windows 2000.

  • Communicator Web Access (2007 release), a Web-based AJAX client that runs on multiple browsers, including Internet Explorer, FireFox, and Safari. This client is available on the same CD as Office Communications Server 2007.

  • Office Communicator Mobile, a client for Windows Mobile devices.

  • Office Communicator Phone Edition, a hardphone available in various form factors offered by Microsoft's hardware partners.

  • Roundtable 2007, a 360-degree conference device.

Each of these clients provides a consistent user experience across clients, making it easy for users familiar with one client to use another Microsoft client without retraining themselves on how the next client functions.

Although it is not comprehensive, Table 1-4 illustrates the features supported by the different Microsoft clients.
