DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol)
Maintains a pool of addresses (scope) and assigns them dynamically. |
Can assign IP address, subnet mask, default gateway, DNS server, WINS server. |
Uses broadcasts and one or more DHCP servers. |
Clients only need DHCP enabled; address of server is not required. |
Manage with DHCP snap-in. |
Authorization: Windows 2000 authorizes DHCP servers; Windows 2000 Server DHCP service will not start without authorization. |
Reservations: IP addresses can be reserved for specific computers. |
Options: Sends gateway, DNS, and other information along with IP address. |
DHCP relay: Forwards DHCP requests between subnets when a router is not configured to forward DHCP. |
Dynamic DNS updates: DHCP server contacts DNS server to update addresses of clients; Windows 2000 clients can do this themselves. |
