Acknowledgements

WITH AGE COMES, RATHER LATER than it should, a realisation of those many people I haven’t thanked enough.

I owe a huge debt to Richard Nelson Bolles, author of the world-famous What Color Is Your Parachute? My work as a career strategist was inspired by the creativity, wisdom and generosity of 125 hours’ teaching from Dick Bolles at two of his summer workshops in Bend, Oregon, and over a decade of encouragement and support.

Thanks to those who have recently invited me to write about work and careers: James Brockett (People Management), Sarah Green (Harvard Business Review online), Martin Stevens (Metro), and to those who have allowed me to road test ideas with different audiences: Judith Armatage, Isabel Chadwick and Robin Wood (Career Management Consultants Ltd), Graeme Dixon and Steve Gorton (AMBA), Suchi Mukherjee (Gumtree), Deborah Hockham (I Am Events), Lorraine Silverman, Janie Wilson (Can Do It Now).

I am enormously grateful to all those who shaped and challenged my thinking about job hunting in the course of writing this book, many of whom appear in its pages as contributors: Gill Best, Jo Bond, Keith Busfield, Julian Childs, Stephanie Clarke, Angella Clarke-Jervoise, Claire Coldwell, Jane Downes, Zena Everett, Matthias Feist, Peter Fennah, Pauline Godley, Dudley Harrop, Leon Hendra, Kate Howlett, Cathy Kay, Stuart McIntosh, Brian McIvor, Rob Nathan, Al Owens, Daniel Porot, Steve Preston, Robin Rose, Cheryl Roshak, Sophie Rowan, Malcolm Watt, John Whapham, Ruth Winden, and fellow members of the LinkedIn Career Coach Forum.

I owe enormous thanks to my attentive, creative editor at Pearson, Elie Williams. My huge appreciation also goes to my agent James Wills at Watson, Little, for his diligence and encouragement.

This book is dedicated to the memory of Sue Blake (1961–2012), expert publicist and shining friend. I couldn’t have got here without you.
