Acknowledgments

I am obligated to many people who have influenced me over the years since my first book was published in 2005, and I will thank each of them personally. Here, I offer my appreciation to those who worked with me specifically on this book.

Jennifer Nordin has again contributed her extraordinary language skills, mathematical aptitude, and attention to detail, making this a far better work. I simply could not have executed this effort without her.

A team of interns worked with us: Chris Raslavich, Eric Ward, Nicole Calvario, Takhmina Nasimova, John Fuller, Shreya Walia, Jiaqi Feng, R. Daniel Jones, and Hanchen Zheng, and to each I express my great appreciation.

Within the Global Financial Integrity team, Tom Cardamone offered outstanding advice and comment. Also helpful have been Dev Kar, Rick Rowden, Joe Spanjers, and two previous GFI colleagues, Heather Lowe and Clark Gascoigne.

Others who read the manuscript and offered broad commentary and detailed suggestions are Huguette Labelle, William Gale, Arvinn Gadgil, Françoise Valérian, John Cassara, Harald Tolan, Olav Lundstøl, John Stremlau, and Steve Young.

Considerable thanks go to Larry Diamond for his generous foreword and indeed for his decades of contributions toward making the world a better place.

T. M. Hawley provided absolutely superb editorial advice.

At Berrett-Koehler, Steve Piersanti immediately grasped what I was saying and added his considerable experience guiding publication of this book. Jeevan Sivasubramaniam ably made it all come together.

My wife Pauline has shaped my thinking more than anyone. My greatest thanks are owed to her.
