COLOR PLATE 1 The top left illustration shows what happens if pure primary colors (red, green, and blue) overlap, revealing the three secondary colors (cyan, magenta, and yellow); if all three primaries overlap, white light is reflected. The top right illustration shows what happens if white light is passed through filters of yellow, cyan, and magenta: the overlapping areas show red, green, and blue, and the center will have no light passed through since each of the three filters removes one of the three primary light rays. The bottom illustration shows the relationship of the three primary lights as they are passed through filters of the three secondary colors.

COLOR PLATE 2 The four squares of color show how adjacent colors and intensities affect a color. The illustration at the bottom shows light passing through the prisms in a typical three-chip video camera. White light (containing the three primary colors red, green, and blue) passes through the lens and enters the prism blocks. Red light is reflected toward the red chip, green light passes straight through to the green chip, and blue light is reflected toward the blue chip.
