40 4. FACETED FRAMEWORK OF INTERACTIVE IR USER STUDIES
the information-seeking episode compared to the cases where participants were merely asked to
nd documents relevant to a given task (in fact, one or two paragraphs of search task description).
4.3 SUMMARY
is chapter explains the facets and dimensions of IIR user studies and emphasizes the potential
relationships among them. Research focus and problems are the roots of user studies based on
which researchers decide specic variables, participants, tasks, system and interface features, as
well as behavioral measures and models for data analysis. We illustrate our faceted framework in
a representative example of IIR user studies (i.e., Bron et al., 2013). In addition, we also discussed
several ignored and under-reported facets and factors that may signicantly aect the nal results
and outputs of the entire user study procedure.
In Chapter 5 we will apply the faceted framework illustrated here in deconstructing, explain-
ing, and evaluating the decisions and compromises made in IIR user study design.
