Explanation: Where a BA has a mentor, either from within the BA profession or another discipline, it is good practice for both mentor and mentee to discuss what they hope can be achieved through the mentoring process and document this via a mentoring agreement.
It is important to define a time frame for reviewing the agreement and to identify questions to be discussed during a review. These questions could include:
• Are these goals still relevant?
• What progress has been made?
• Is this relationship still useful/working/needed?
• Are we able to commit appropriate time for this relationship?
• What are the goals/actions going forward?
Open-ended mentoring relationships can cease to be useful or fizzle out. Agreeing in advance that these potentially difficult subjects will be discussed makes the prospect of ending or changing the mentoring relationship easier.
The same approach could be used to agree specific outcomes and ways of working in a coaching relationship.
