Chapter 13
Social Networking with Windows 10

One of the most popular activities online is communicating with other people via online e-mail accounts, such as Outlook, Apple iCloud, and Gmail.

The updated Windows 10 People app lets you integrate your contacts and updates from multiple e-mail accounts into one single location for that person. For some Windows users, the People app has now become the de facto hub for all their e-mail accounts. The Mail app relies on the People app for selecting contacts to send e-mail and instant messages.

This chapter explores how to access various online accounts in Windows 10, including using the People app to consolidate many of your favorite online communications into one app.

Using the People App

The Windows 10 People app is provided on the Windows Start menu when you install Windows 10. Figure 13.1 shows the People live tile. This tile displays information, updates, status changes, and photo changes for contacts you follow on different social media tools.

Setting up an account

You don't see any live updates on your People app if you haven't set up any accounts under Windows 10 yet. The People app supports a Microsoft account, Outlook, Apple iCloud, Gmail, and Exchange.

To set up an account, follow these steps:

  1. Show the Windows Start menu.
  2. Click the People app. The People app screen appears. (See Figure 13.2.)
  3. To add accounts to People, click the ellipses at the top right of the search field. Click Settings.
  4. Click Add an Account to display the Choose an Account screen (see Figure 13.3).
  5. Click an account, such as Outlook.Com. A screen appears, such as the Add Your Microsoft Account screen, that walks you through setting up an account to use with the People app. Figure 13.4 shows an example of the Add Your Microsoft Account screen.
  6. Enter your username and password to authorize Microsoft to use your account. A similar screen appears for other social media services you set up with the People app.
  7. Click Sign In to sign in to the account. After a few moments, you are shown the All Done screen, shown in Figure 13.5.
  8. Click Done.

After you set up one account, return to the main People app screen. You can choose to set up other accounts, such as Exchange or Google accounts from the Add an Account option.

Editing a Contact

Contacts in the People app are synced with the accounts you set up in the People app. To change information associated with a contact, you use the Edit feature. Sometimes these contacts require updating because of changes in information. You may also want to edit contacts if the contact is not complete. For example, the contact information in the People app includes the capability to show a picture to help you identify or remember that contact. You need to edit the contact to add a photo for a contact.

The following steps show how to edit a contact in the People app:

  1. In the People app, right-click a contact.
  2. Choose Edit. The Edit page appears. Figure 13.6 shows an example of an Outlook Contact being edited.
  3. Make your edits. You can modify the contact's photo, name, phone, e-mail, address, company, and other criteria. Under Other, for example, you can set a website address, job title, office location, name of the contact's significant other, children, birthday, and anniversary. You also can add a free-form note about a contact.
  4. When you're finished editing the contact, click the Save button.

Navigating the People app

The People app is fairly easy to navigate by using your mouse or touchscreen actions (such as swiping to the left or right). You can display the People app menu by right-clicking. Contextual commands for the items you're currently viewing display in that menu. Also, the People button returns you to the main People app screen when you click it.

All Contacts

The All Contacts screen lets you easily find the name of the contact you're looking for. The letter grid lets you jump to the first letter of the person's name you're looking for. When you click a contact, you're shown all the posts and photos your contact has recently posted.
