Introduction

Teaching is a noble profession and we are blessed to be part of it.

This book approaches the collaborative nature of learning. In highlighting the way learning is assisted by teaching, we note that the actualization of this book was made possible by the support and efforts of many individuals. Most important has been the support of those closest to us. It is the continuing commitment from our lifelong mates, Sally and Lois, that provides us with the ongoing support required for our efforts. Their understanding of the demands and requirements continues to enable our sharing our ideas with you and others who will use these writings.

The way this book was envisioned included the voices of many beyond our own. We asked our friends and their friends to contribute to expand the view of teaching photography. Many of those who submitted contributions were unknown to us prior to our starting this project, but have earned our thanks and respect, both for their submissions of writing and their students'images and for taking part in interviews. To access many we used the outreach of the Society for Photographic Education and the Photographic/Imaging Education Association, which expanded our personal contact lists. Particularly we wish to thank Mary Virginia Swanson for the foreword she contributed for the book.

Part of the endeavor would not have been possible without the efforts of Diane Heppner, our editor, along with the assistance of Paul Gottehrer our production editor and the other diligent staff of Focal Press.

Finally, we wish to thank you for choosing to pursue teaching photography and selecting this book to assist you in your quest.
