About the Authors

JAMES M. KAPLAN

James M. Kaplan is a partner in McKinsey & Company’s Business Technology and Financial Services practices. He co-leads McKinsey’s IT infrastructure and cybersecurity practices globally and serves banks, health care providers, technology companies, insurance carriers, and manufacturers in maximizing the value from business technology. He has contributed articles on business technology to the McKinsey Quarterly, McKinsey on Business Technology, Financial Times Connected Business, the Wall Street Journal, and the Harvard Business Review blog network. James holds an AB in history from Brown University and an MBA from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. He lives in New York with his wife, Amy, and their two sons, Adam and Matthew.

TUCKER BAILEY

Tucker is a partner in the Washington, D.C., location of McKinsey’s Business Technology Office, where he focuses principally on defense, security, and IT issues. He has served multiple Fortune 500 and public-sector clients across a range of IT issues and leads McKinsey’s cybersecurity practice in North America. Prior to working for McKinsey, Tucker served as an Information Dominance Warfare Officer with the U.S. Navy and as a special agent with the Naval Criminal Investigative Service. Tucker holds a BSE from Duke University with majors in civil engineering and political science, and has an MBA from Harvard Business School.

CHRIS REZEK

Chris Rezek is a senior expert consultant with McKinsey & Company in Boston and is part of the firm’s Risk Management and Business Technology practices. He is a core leader of McKinsey’s cybersecurity practice serving banks, manufacturers, and other enterprises managing information risk as well as investors and technology companies on cybersecurity product-market strategy. Chris has helped define best practices on cloud risk management with the Cloud Security Alliance and risk technology and operations with the Institute of International Finance. He has a BS from MIT and an MBA from Yale. Chris lives near Boston with his family.

DEREK O’HALLORAN

Derek is the head of Information Technology Industries at the World Economic Forum, responsible for the CEO-led community of the world’s leading IT companies and for shaping the technology agenda for the broader organization. Derek manages the Global Agenda Councils on the Future of the Software and Society and on the Future of Electronics, which convene leaders and thought leaders across the industry ecosystem. Derek holds an MPA in international finance and economic policy from the School of International and Public Affairs at Columbia University and an MA Hons in philosophy from the University of Edinburgh and is a graduate of the Global Leadership Fellows Programme at the Forum.

ALAN MARCUS

Alan is senior director and head of Information Technology and Telecommunications Industries at the World Economic Forum. Previously, he held senior management positions in engineering, marketing, and market development in Asia-Pacific, North America, and Europe and the Middle East. He holds a BSc in computer science and computer engineering from Rutgers University, New Jersey and a graduate diploma in telecommunications engineering from the University of California, Berkeley.
