I must first thank Denis Mee and Eric Daniel, for it was their invitation to contribute a chapter on digital audio to their definitive work on magnetic recording1 which gave me the impetus to write a self-contained work.

The Audio Engineering Society provides a continuing forum for discussion of digital audio though its conferences and publications which was essential to my researches. The AES elected me to the status of Fellow in 1991 for my contribution to digital audio and I regard this as the greatest privilege ever extended to me.

Many individuals have found time to discuss complicated subjects and to supply reference material, others have helped by suggesting subjects for inclusion or by reviewing material. I would particularly like to thank the following: Toshi Doi, John Ajimine, David Bush, Roger Lagadec, Kees Schouhamer Immink, Roger Wood, John Mallinson, Tim Shelton, Guy McNally, Tony Griffiths, Steven Harris, Graham Roe, Robin Caine, Steve Lyman, Tom Cavanagh, Joseph Manger, John Vanderkooy and Stanley Lipshitz.

Francis Rumsey of the University of Surrey kindly suggested the title.
