Summary

The innovations and extensibility points delivered in Windows SharePoint Services version 3.0 make it a true solutions platform for developers. Coupled with the investments made in WSS, the extended set of services in Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007—one example being the Business Data Catalog discussed earlier in Chapter 4—make for even greater OBA solution opportunities when integrating with LOB systems. From a developer’s perspective, it should be easy to see that SharePoint Products and Technologies are continually evolving and offer a solid foundation to continue to invest in learning and leveraging as a core part of your OBA solution.

The context of this book is about building Office Business Applications. When you couple MOSS with integration of LOB system data that then can be surfaced inside the 2007 Microsoft Office system, clients’ developers have an incredible breadth of solution opportunities. The ability to deliver a wide range of integrated solutions that can offer integrated experiences that millions of information workers are familiar with today is a huge advantage for both developers and, more importantly, businesses.

This chapter provided an overview of the different ways Windows SharePoint Services version 3.0 and Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 can be extended and customized by developers when creating OBAs. There is so much content to cover on this topic, and I know I missed some of the finer details, so I encourage you to review the SDK in depth to uncover even more information on the topics covered in this chapter. Enjoy the closing chapters; they showcase even more of the solution possibilities that can be delivered with the Office system.
