This type of visualization is used to display the geographical area mapped to the data determined by the specified buckets/aggregations. In order to make use of this visualization, documents must have some fields mapped to the geo_point datatype. It uses a GeoHash grid aggregation and groups points into buckets that represent cells in a grid. This type of visualization was previously called a tile map.
