Preface

Since 2015, the International Society of Service Innovation Professionals (ISSIP, see http://issi.org) has been running Discovery Summits 1 bringing together speakers and participants with an interest in better understanding intersection of a leading-edge technology trends and total user experience and explore how institutions and individuals can leverage the value cocreation opportunities that exist at these intersections for the benefit of business and society. Over the last couple of years, we have been exploring how the nature of work and jobs are changing in the face of rapid technological changes. We have been exploring topics including job vs. task automation, liquid workforce, skills needed for current/future roles, impact of Artificial intelligence (AI) to the workplace and workforce, how can AI be used to help reskill workers that are impacted by AI, the role of technological advances such as bots, AI, intelligent assistants, Internet of Things (IoT), and policy implication of the changing world of work.

This book is based on a call for chapters that was sent out to participants at an ISSIP Discovery Summit held on September 27, 2018.

To create this book, we invited academic scholars and industry professionals with expertise in all areas of future of work who spoke or participated in that summit to write a short paper/chapter. Industry, academic, and policy perspectives are presented here.

As digitization, fueled by advancement in machine learning and data science, is disrupting markets and industries, institutions as corporations, educational establishments, and governments are grappling to take advantage of the tremendous opportunities and address significant challenges caused by these seismic shifts. These shifts have implications at the organization, team, and individual levels. Innovative organization are redesigning work and providing workforce retraining opportunities to ensure machines are enhancing, not replacing, human capabilities as they are transforming for exponential growth in the digital economy. Innovative teams are adapting agile practices to be more dynamic and respond to the fast-changing market forces by leveraging the best of people and technology. Innovative individuals are welcoming life-long learning to acquire the skills that enables them to upskill and stay in demand.

The ISSIP BEP Future of Work collection explores these topics and aims to offer insights and practical wisdom easily applicable to the workplace.

Potential beneficiaries of these books include executives and middle managers, professionals and practitioners who are seeking either to acquire new skills or refresh and update their knowledge of existing ones, and advanced business, MBA, and EMBA students.

Questions that we continue to seek better and better answers include:

  • How can IT, HR, product groups, and marketing be the driver of innovation for digital transformation and future of work?

We hope readers find this book a thought-provoking springboard for advancing their understanding of how work is changing today and how they can better prepare for the opportunities and challenges in this fast- changing landscape of work.
