Lesson E: Place Images and Graphics

We are about to place six images. For each of the left-hand pages, I’ve built only one graphic. However, for each of the right-hand pages, I’ve supplied two images between which to choose. Let’s do this methodically. We’ll load one image at a time and place it in the appropriate frame before moving to the next one. It is possible to load multiple images at once, but we need to make decisions about composition as we go.

The Steps

First, let’s go over the steps we’ll need to follow to place each image. In each case, be sure you’re looking at the correct spread.

  • Be sure nothing is selected (-shift-A/Ctrl-Shift-A) then go to the File menu and choose Place…. Navigate to the project assets folder and double-click on the file you need.
  • With the loaded cursor, click in the heart (not on the edge) of the appropriate placeholder frame. Even though you cannot select it, you will be able to place images into it.
  • For the large images, you will have to use the Content Grabber to recompose and achieve the desired framing. Below, I show framing that will provide a good background for the text. Hold the Shift key to prevent moving the image up or down while moving it left or right within its frame.

The Images

For the square frame on page 2, use basic shapes.ai to accompany the topic Drawing Basic Shapes.
