Logo Redesign

Simon Frouws, Cape Town, South Africa

Eric DeVine, a luthier based on Maui who custom builds guitars and ukuleles, came upon the work of Cape Town designer Simon Frouws on Logopond.com. Geographically polar opposites (Frouws notes amusingly that if you drill a hole through the earth from his studio in South Africa, you’d emerge just north of DeVine’s workshop in Hawaii), the two share a passion for bespoke craft, which was at the heart of DeVine’s vision for his new logo. Frouws quickly delved into creating an identity that would succeed on correspondence and online, as well as on each instrument.

DeVine’s existing logo played off his Hawaiian locale, and he desired a mark that projected a more timeless feel. “The logo needed to be strong yet elegant and portray a sense of motion,” explains Frouws. What’s more, the finished design had to speak to the level of quality found in DeVine’s instruments, as his customers include both skilled musicians such as Eddie Vedder and expert collectors. “Above all, it needed to be unique and to convey the incredible detail in Eric’s handiwork. It’s more of a personal artisanal mark than a corporate identity.”

Designer Simon Frouws drew inspiration from DeVine’s French lineage as well as the word vine to create the final logo.

Frouws initially experimented with a purely typographical solution, but then veered toward a modern take on French filigree work, drawing upon the French lineage of the DeVine family name and playing off the word vine. He also sought to echo the symmetry found in DeVine’s musical instruments. The ultimate solution focuses on a capital V supported by ornaments on either side.

As it would be featured most prominently on the guitar’s headstock, the logo had to fit that shape and be simple enough for laser-cutting and inlay work, usually in wood or mother-of-pearl.

“It’s critical for any designer to understand how their logo will be used,” says Frouws. “The biggest challenge was to find a logo that worked across different applications. To solve this, I created three variations—for product, stationery, and Web—with increasing levels of detail.”

Specializing almost exclusively in packaging design for the wine and spirits industry, Frouws had never worked on an identity for instruments before. In the end, because DeVine’s is such a personal mark—his work being one-of-a-kind—it had to strike the perfect chord. The identity now appears on the company website, stationery, t-shirts, and even a kayak oar. DeVine was so pleased with the finished result, he has enlisted Frouws to extend the visual language of the logo to create custom fret boards and purfling.

Identity Design

The Beauty Shop, Portland, Oregon

When Tim O’Neil hired The Beauty Shop to design the identity for his new venture, Fidelis Co., he sent them the Walt Whitman poem “I Hear America Singing,” from 1860, as part of his project brief. Fidelis Co. would source handcrafted products and sell them online through its website. O’Neil, who had served as a United States Marine Corps infantry officer and named his company after the Marine Corps motto, Semper Fidelis, or “Always Faithful,” thought the poem signified what the enterprise was all about and thus provided excellent inspiration for its brand voice.

Jen Thomas, principal of The Beauty Shop, responded to the brief instinctually, as not only was her father a veteran of the Marine Corps, but he and her mother also operated an antiques business and Jen had grown up around vintage Marine ephemera. This aesthetic met the demands of the brand identity perfectly, as it evoked a time when skilled craftsmen manufactured what was bought and sold in America.

“Our approach as we began sketching concepts was to take inspiration not only from the poem and project brief, but also from the qualities inherent in the idea of ‘Always Faithful’ and the spirit of heritage craftsmanship,” says Thomas. She researched early photographs as well as antique Marine insignias and even Walt Whitman’s handwriting, which inspired the imagery and fonts used in the initial directions.

The Beauty Shop’s final design combined a chiseled logotype inspired by nineteenth-century product crates and stamp icons. The F&Co. monogram can also function as a logo.

After sketching more than twenty different concepts, they narrowed them down to three strong directions. The vintage Marine insignia in the third direction, interlocking the F and Co., spoke to O’Neil, and he was excited about the stamp motif the designers created in the first direction. He implements the stamps on clothing and product labels as well as packaging.

For the typeface in the final logotype, Thomas traveled to nearby Aurora, Oregon, to look for examples of nineteenth-century product crates. “I loved the idea of borrowing the vernacular of early retail typography, since Tim was opening a modern online version of the same.” The Fidelis Co. identity launched in October 2012.

Casey Martin/Leo Burnett, Chicago, Illinois

At more than seventy-five years old, the venerable Chicago-based advertising agency Leo Burnett had a radical idea. It would create an innovation and new venture center inside the firm itself. Farmhouse, as it was branded in 2011, named after Burnett’s famous think tanks held at his family farm, creates, incubates, and activates new branded products and services. Its unique approach of integrating product, story, and strategy deserved a visual identity that spoke to its progressive proposition, at once rooted in a feet-on-the-ground, Midwest sensibility.

The business and growth department brought the brand to Leo Burnett’s design section for identity development. “It’s groundbreaking for this to happen within the walls of a traditional advertising agency,” says design director Alisa Wolfson. It is an innovation in itself. Wolfson’s team plucked Casey Martin out of its pool of designers to create the Farmhouse logo, website, and collateral.

One of the few guardrails the firm gave Martin from the outset was that the identity had to look like it came from the parent company. Leo Burnett’s visual system is known for its refined color palette: black and white with a spark of PMS 377 green. The firm selects color carefully, each hue representing a function.

“The idea of an innovation company is simple, but it is also complex,” says Martin. “The identity would have to describe to its clients what it does.” He built a color philosophy into the logo early on to infuse the brand with the feel of the Leo Burnett agency. The color palette and clean, simple look are direct descendants of Leo Burnett’s HumanKind philosophy.

Martin first produced a number of logo explorations around a “charts and diagram” aesthetic of interconnected colored circles. He sought out a contemporary look that still referenced the notion of a farmhouse. “I was trying to think of a contemporary way to illustrate a farmhouse and keep it as minimal as possible,” he explains.

Because Farmhouse was so new, the logo both performed as an identity and offered ideas to the team for how it could approach the Farmhouse model. The Farmhouse logo and identity were formally announced in the spring of 2012, with collateral such as stationery and many other applications under way.

The name Minke refers to a species of Arctic whale that carries ink, rare and awe-inspiring enough to conjure such attributes as quality, strength, and experience—all good brand traits. The specialty graphic production company Minke required an identity that matched the originality of its name and offerings. Rather than limiting its services to printing and binding on budget, Minke works on each piece from its inception, consulting with clients to envision then customize their products using specialized papers and printing techniques, both old-world and new.

Minke approached Atipo to create a logo and identity system that breaks away from that of other graphic production companies to show the high level of care Minke invests in every piece it makes. The logo would have to work just as well in the digital realm as in print because much of the company’s business streams in from around the globe through its website.

With an evocative name to start, Atipo first played with the idea of using a whale image, but then steered away from this direction because of its overlap with other sectors, such as aquariums and NGOs. The designers worked toward an abstract form, reminiscent of a whale’s fluke but equally conjuring of other elements.

Explains creative director Raúl García Del Pomar Corada, “The Minke logo icon is an abstract image created out of the sum of the brand attributes: the paper plane representing creativity; the diamond symbolizing the care of a perfect job; the heart meaning passion; and the tail of a minke whale, the origin of the name.” For the logotype, the designers selected Lyon Text in italic to contrast with the icon.

Dialogue with its customer base is important to Minke for more reasons than pure collaboration. The brand has something to say about the death of paper at the hands of digital media. Atipo devised the slogan, “Good morning paper,” as a way of calling attention to the specialness of the medium and also to resurrect it in some way.

With the addition of a system of icons for the company website, the identity launched in February 2013.

FutureBrand, Melbourne, Australia

Although the airline Fiji Airways became Air Pacific in 1970 to reflect its expanded regional presence, during the decades since, the new name became less relevant as other countries in the Pacific established their own airlines. The company wanted to return to its roots in both name and brand identity to align itself more closely with its Fijian heritage and better promote the destination in emerging markets.

Fiji Airways approached FutureBrand Australia to craft its identity. “We searched for a new visual language and story for Fiji Airways that would challenge the convention for airline identities and one that would be distinctive and authentically Fijian,” says design director Sally Anderson. The FutureBrand team saw the prevalence of traditional Masi art throughout the islands of Fiji and concluded that it would be the perfect visual language for the national airline.

FutureBrand and the Fiji Airways team collaborated with a local Masi artist to create the Teteva symbol that would become the Fiji Airways logo icon.

Collaborating closely with the Fiji Airways marketing team, FutureBrand partnered with locally renowned Masi artist Makereta Matemosi to craft a traditional Fijian Masi and a suite of motifs based on the airline’s vision and values. Matemosi first created five concepts for the symbol at the center of the Masi with pen on paper, each with a distinct meaning. The team selected the Teteva design for the logo icon because it represented the interconnection between people and place.

The airplane livery features designs around the Teteva that symbolize the clear water and sandy beaches as well as a welcome to new visitors.

The symbol was then simplified as much as possible while retaining those aspects, such as the four crosses and the central diamond and petals, that transmitted the original meaning—the negative space carrying just as much importance as the positive.

The team collaborated with Matemosi to realize fifteen different Masi motifs in addition to the centerpiece. “The aim of the motifs was to embed the visual language of Masi into the airline identity,” Anderson explains. “It was vital, however, to understand their meanings to ensure they were used appropriately and sensitively, rather than as decoration.”

The geometric nature of Masi artwork inspired the word mark. Typographer Kris Sowersby expanded upon the high-contrast look to craft a communications typeface that complements the logo, with a hand-cut style, distinctive linear strokes, and characters recalling the central diamond shape. The airline named the typeface Bula, which means “hello” in Fijian.

The FutureBrand team also influenced the cabin experience, from customizing the trim and finish of the seats and cabin walls to the comfort items in business class. Fiji Airways officially relaunched in June 2013 to great acclaim worldwide.

Martin Schmetzer, Stockholm, Sweden

Jesse McKee, one of the founders of Headstash Roasting Co. in Evanston, Illinois, came upon the hand-drawn typography of Martin Schmetzer on Behance.net and loved its link to graffiti. When it came time to develop a logo and brand identity for Headstash, McKee brought Schmetzer on board to custom make the company’s logotype. Schmetzer began drawing graffiti as a twelve-year-old, and it was this aesthetic, still found in his work, that McKee wanted to replicate in order to stand out from other Chicago roastery marks.

Says Schmetzer, “As a graffiti writer I always aimed for symmetry in my letters, which is something that has followed me in my hand-drawn typography and logo designs.”

Headstash had a clear idea of what it wanted in terms of a logo: an H surrounded by an oval shape and some ornamentation, much like the center of a U.S. currency bill. Most important, the design would steer clear of the simplified, sans-serif logotypes of competitive coffee roasters in the area. McKee sent Schmetzer images of competitor logos for reference.

The main challenge was to render an elaborate logo that could also be reduced in size for placement on coffee cups and demitasses, as well as stamps and stickers. After working with the design, they decided to create two versions—an H emblem for smaller-sized applications and a full-name logo for signs, headers, and other large-scale usages.

Schmetzer always begins by drawing on paper, roughly sketching first to explore different compositions and solutions for his client to consider. Once a favorite is selected, he then draws much more finely, tightening the lines and honing the details. The approved design is scanned into Illustrator, where he redraws it using vectors.

“Starting with pen and paper adds a particular flow and life to my creations since it allows me to twist and bend the letters into something unique,” Schmetzer states.

The full-name logotype balances decorative twists and turns on the lettering with strong, sharp edges. The name follows the lines of the ribbon it anchors in its grasp, with lighter background ornamentation evocative of steam or coffee aroma. By contrast, the H emblem falls in line with the original concept of the oval shape and reads more clearly on merchandise.

Headstash Roasting Co. opened in 2013 with an array of wares displaying the hand-drawn insignia: coffee and cocoa bags, stash jars for roasted beans, and brewing supplies.

Melanie Green had a lifelong dream of opening a bookstore. Not a mom-and-pop kind of bookstore, but something larger carrying a mainstream inventory and providing customers with a top-to-bottom literary experience. When a historic building in her town of Hutchinson, Kansas, came on the market in 2012, she took the plunge, deciding to call the enterprise Bluebird Books because of the bird’s popular symbology of happiness.

But she needed a logo. Green approached Gardner Design with her vision: Bluebird Books would carry all kinds of volumes as well as offer an environment conducive to reading, including comfortable vintage armchairs, lamps, and free coffee. She expressed her wish that the identity design represent the fact that the store wasn’t just a Kansas goods retailer, but an independent bookstore that could be found in any city.

Designer Brian Miller sketched out an initial direction for the logo that hybridized a realistic-looking bluebird with a decorative pattern found in old endpapers and vintage typewriter text. While the design had a number of key elements she desired, Green wanted to see some other possibilities.

Miller decided to take a different path. Two books on the early-twentieth-century graphic designers Abram Games and Hans Schleger that sit above his desk reminded him of a particular style of work from the period. “I started to draw from my memory of their aesthetic and how it often related to using geometry to build shapes,” he recalls.

Miller established “rules” for the bluebird symbol as he constructed it: It had to be made using geometric shapes, nothing organic. He envisioned the bird standing up, perched, preparing to take off—much like one feels when starting a good novel—and placed it above a simple suggestion of an open book.

To age the mark and give it more character, Miller added a dusting of texture along the edges of the icon inspired by stippling, a shading technique often resurrected in midcentury illustration, keeping the palette to only two tones of blue. He balanced the logotype between three different typefaces—scripted, serif, and a modern sans serif—to represent the eclectic nature of Bluebird Book’s offerings. The orange egg-shaped mark in the logotype acts like a copyright or trademark symbol while proudly announcing the store’s Kansas origins.

Bluebird Books opened its doors in November 2012. With the creation of merchandise such as t-shirts and bags of coffee beans, as well as an active website, the identity continues to bloom through numerous applications.

Identity and Website Redesign

Eight Hour Day, Minneapolis, Minnesota

“What is a secret society in a world gone digital?” was the question design studio Eight Hour Day asked in one of its initial directions for the new Manifest Digital identity. Manifest founder Jim Jacoby had approached the studio after conducting extensive internal explorations, and he met the concept with enthusiasm. His company provides businesses with digital solutions—websites, mobile applications, online campaigns—as well as digital strategies based on the way people interact in the marketplace and workplace.

The Manifest team had written a brief expressing numerous ideas that they wanted the brand to evoke in terms of time, connection, creativity, and the human experience. The secret society theme conveyed two important tenets: the human embodiment of creativity (“to manifest”) and longstanding roots in meaningful connections preceding technological leaps afforded by the Web.

The Manifest Digital logo was inspired by the visual language of secret societies such as the Masons and the Illuminati.

Designers Katie Kirk and Nathan Strandberg, who run Eight Hour Day, crafted the aesthetic after researching insignia and symbols of past societies like the Masons and the Illuminati. They put together mood boards echoing the power of these mysterious groups, such as wax stamps and star-shaped medallions.

“It was about this idea of craftsmanship and connection,” says Kirk. The previous Manifest identity was “a little ’90s.” She and Strandberg carried the new concept into a logo that combines a wax-stamp motif and an antique insignia; custom badges for different aspects of the company; pattern work; and a forty-glyph alphabet that could be used as a language within the company to share ideas in new ways. The glyphs also have some fun participating in the visual system, on the website, and in communications such as creative assets and briefs.

The forty-glyph alphabet, derived from secret-society encryptions, speaks to internal company values as well as externally to clients.

The identity has been well received in-house and out.

Situated in a rambling, 125-year-old structure that once was a lima bean factory, SND CYN Studios offers space for creative people of different callings. Ty Mattson of Mattson Creative conceived it as a cooperative workspace, where individual business owners could work side by side while maintaining their autonomy. It was what he desired for his own branding design firm and found that many other independents were craving exactly this same environment.

Now when tenants of SND CYN (pronounced “Sand Canyon”) come to work, they enter a truly collaborative space not only in concept but also in its interior design. Mattson joined with other members to source furniture, decorative items, and functional objects on eBay and other places. The result is an eclectic aesthetic that represents SND CYN’s different pursuits fitting together.

When Mattson decided it was time to create a logotype for SND CYN that would tie the “brand” together, he had the building’s diverse interior in mind.

“The whole idea of having a brand like SND CYN—a different kind of ‘brand’—is that it could be anyone’s space or brand,” says Mattson. “Instead of hanging my own name on the door I’ve got an incredibly inspiring space, a richer creative environment.”

Mattson called upon type designer Erik Marinovich in San Francisco to develop the logotype for the entrance lobby—which would eventually make its way onto t-shirts and coffee mugs, as well as other unifying assets. Mattson sent Marinovich a sketch of what he was thinking of, an irreverent, skateboardy script, which Marinovich took and refined just enough to be more sophisticated while still retaining its younger vibe. They went back and forth, drawing over each other’s sketches.

Mattson took the color palette for the design from the interior of SND CYN itself: chartreuse with a bit of red to pop. Because the logotype would be painted on the wall of the lobby, which was purposely monotone, he wanted it to stand out in both color and scale. “Unexpected color and unexpected scale” was an essential part of the brief he sent to Marinovich.

The final design was applied to the wall at SND CYN and at last the enterprise made of many parts had a cohesive symbol, a logo. The renovated space was completed in October 2012.

Anagrama, Monterrey, Mexico

Velvet slippers have a rich history in English royal hospitality, traditionally placed in the rooms of the king and queen’s guests. The modern-day premium brand Romero+McPaul specializes in English-style slippers, giving them a bright, trendy twist.

The company came to Anagrama to realize its visual identity. With two locations in Mexico, the design firm mixes international savvy with a deep appreciation of history. Says designer Mike Herrera, “Our inspiration was heavily drawn from traditional English coats of arms mixed with the over-the-top luxuriousness of the Hamptons and its yacht-club, maritime lifestyle.”

Using the Hamptons as a backdrop for the brand’s storyline, Anagrama created two imaginary characters to capture the lighthearted passions of its offering, Romero and McPaul. Romero they crafted as the mischievous heartthrob embodying the product’s playfulness, warmth, and Latin roots; McPaul came to life as the serious, traditional Englishman to convey its upscale heritage.

The designers collected symbolic references, such as Ivy League badges, bow ties, and vintage travel items, to give them insight into the brand’s essence and bring it more fully to life. The items appear in the identity system, either in the logo itself or in store interiors.

The finished design features a sprig of rosemary (which is, winkingly, romero in Spanish) semi-encircled by the logotype in a way that recalls a university’s official seal. In fact, the designers interweave multiple meanings into the identity, as rosemary is known only to grow close to the sea, supporting the maritime theme. Anagrama also developed an R+MP monogram for the front of the slipper that appears like a stamp throughout the visual system.

Juxtaposing silhouette features (the rosemary) as well as carefully selected script with a custom contemporary typeface for the word mark, Anagrama expressed the brand’s unique crisscross of time periods and personalities. The color palette recalls expensive Veuve Clicquot champagne and at the same time highlights the bright, hip colors the slippers come in—colors that pop against the identity’s other main color, black.

The Anagrama team dove into the creation of a full range of visual elements for the Romero+McPaul slipper brand, including the rosemary sprig icon, which participates in the logo and also stands alone; an R+MP monogram; and a contemporary logotype.

Landor Associates, San Francisco, California

Advanced Ice Cream Technologies, based in Mexico City, came to Landor’s San Francisco office with the proposition of creating a brand that didn’t exist yet: a true luxury ice cream bar. The brand would offer one-of-a-kind confections at a superpremium price point. Both the name and the bar itself would have to speak—or maybe whisper—about the product’s high-end essence.

Turning the lips on its side was a happy accident and created a powerful monogram..

The Landor team traveled to Mexico City to tour the Advanced Ice Cream Technologies facilities, interview key stakeholders, and research competitive ice cream brands. Back in San Francisco, their explorations revolved around the positioning territory of “sensuality,” which they felt offered uncharted ground for the ice cream.

Landor searched for a name that would immediately transport consumers to a place of high quality and also create a sense of intrigue. The first part emerged from the “bar” itself, which would look very different from other brands. The team added the “dot” at the end to give the name a sophisticated ring.

With a name like Bardot, conjuring the goddess of French cinema, Landor homed in on the image of red lips—the icon of sensuousness, desire, as well as taste. “Red as the primary color was driven by the fact that our goal was to create the sexiest ice cream bar available,” says J.P. Sabarots, senior client director at Landor.

While generating imagery around the lips icon, the designers tipped it on its side by accident and, voilà, the logo was born. With only two minimalist elements—thick red lips and a crisp black logotype—the identity invokes the literal shape of an ice cream bar and the sensuous, upmarket qualities of the brand at the same time.

The lips icon inspired an imaginative secondary graphic palette that expresses the brand’s diversity by covering the ice cream in graphic fantasy. “We wanted to make sure that the bars, themselves, embodied the concept,” explains Nicolas Aparicio, executive creative director at Landor. “It is something no other competitor does.”

Each brand element was selected with a fine eye to the superpremium, luxury, and to creating distinction within the category and beyond..

Exquisitely detailed red-black-and-white patterns and illustrations were conceived to give each confection a sense of ultradecadence and utter uniqueness.

Hyperakt, Brooklyn, New York

The collaboration between design and fabrication is fundamental to anything ever getting made, and at New Lab, the goal is to bring the two under the same roof. The developer Macro Sea transformed more than eighty thousand square feet of an 1899 ship hangar in the Brooklyn Navy Yard into a cooperative workspace for world-ranking academic institutions, architecture and design firms, and entrepreneurial entities. Macro Sea asked Brooklyn-based design shop Hyperakt to create the New Lab identity.

As part of its project brief, Macro Sea sent images of biomimicry—the replication of nature in manmade structures—such as intricate natural patterns in cells and plants that engineers reference all the time. This concept is fundamental to New Lab, as it offers tenants the latest technology in 3-D printing, enabling designers to make prototypes from digital models using 3-D molding machines. Based in biomimicry, the process makes it possible for a vision to become a finished product in one place, and it informed Hyperakt’s design for the New Lab logo.

Eric Fensterheim at Hyperakt created three initial logo directions. “It came down to the balance of the concept of biomimicry and a strong mark that could stand on its own outside of that idea, in the public realm and on collateral,” he says.

The first direction centered on an organic sphere made from tiny cell-like triangles. The second referenced the structure of the ship hangar itself, with its many crisscross steel beams. A third direction presented a hexagonal seal inspired by the hangar’s angular facade with the cube-like letters NL at its center.

Macro Sea liked the organic nature of the first direction and the concreteness of the hexagon in the third, so Hyperakt combined the two.

Fensterheim worked off the hexagon until finally he saw in it the possibility of creating a mark that was both 3-D and 2-D, much like an M.C. Escher drawing. The finished icon reads as three cubes patterned within a hexagon and just as well as a two-dimensional flower connecting each point.

Hyperakt’s final solution for the New Lab logo can be read simultaneously as a three-dimensional pattern of building blocks and a two-dimensional geometric representation of a flower.

Hyperakt took elements from these two logo concepts to create the finished version.

Once the icon was conceived, Fensterheim sought out a typeface that would mimic the hexagonal mark. He tweaked the lettering in the font as well as the icon to balance the line weights in the final lockup.

Hyperakt also designed an early website announcing the creation of the facility in 2013.
